Stanley 56 Core Box Plane

offered 1909 - 1923

value A$ 1,200

6" long with 3/8"cutter.

You have to fork out a lot of money for a V-shaped piece of metal with a rosewood handle and a small cutter. Patternmakers paid a lot less for this tool around WW 1. It cuts a half circle i.e. a core box. First cut  a centre or starter groove with a plough, then run the core box plane up and down whilst tilting it sideways to cover all angles. Eventually you will end up with a perfect half circle. The V-shaped cutter and the 90º angled sides make sure both sides end up even. Larger version see 57
